Invisible Agent follows Frank Raymond, the grandson of the original invisible man, who runs a printing shop in Manhattan under an assumed name. When Axis agents try to force the invisibility formula from him, he offers his help to the Allied war effort instead. He is sent into Nazi Germany to uncover an espionage network and stop a planned attack on New York. The film blends horror and science fiction with wartime suspense, pitting a reluctant hero against enemy agents on their own ground.
Edwin L. Marin directed the film, which sits midway through the run of features listed for him, between Gold Rush Maisie and Show Business. Curt Siodmak wrote the screenplay, and Frank Lloyd produced for Universal Pictures and Frank Lloyd Productions. Jon Hall plays Frank, with Ilona Massey as Maria Sorenson, Peter Lorre as Baron Ikito, Cedric Hardwicke as Conrad Stauffer, J. Edward Bromberg as Karl Heiser and Albert Bassermann as Arnold Schmidt among a credited cast of 47.
Released in July 1942, the film runs 81 minutes and took in about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 3,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 from a much smaller set of 64 votes, indicating modest and broadly similar reactions from both audiences.
