Cub, originally titled Welp, is a Dutch-Belgian horror adventure about twelve-year-old Sam, an imaginative boy who joins his scout pack for summer camp in a remote stretch of forest. Bullied by the older scouts and dismissed as a daydreamer, Sam becomes convinced that something dangerous is hiding among the trees. When he stumbles on evidence of a feral boy and a masked figure living in the woods, his warnings are treated as another of his stories, leaving the camp exposed as night falls.
The film was released in October 2014 and runs 85 minutes. Jonas Govaerts directed from a screenplay he wrote with Roel Mondelaers, with Peter De Maegd producing. It was Govaerts's first feature, followed years later by Hazard. Maurice Luijten plays Sam, alongside Evelien Bosmans as the scout leader Jasmijn, Gill Eeckelaert as the wild boy Kai, Jan Hammenecker as Stroper, and Titus De Voogdt and Stef Aerts as the scout leaders Chris and Peter.
Reception has been modest and divided. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.5 from roughly 257 votes, suggesting a small but reasonably engaged viewership. A critics' score of 5.2 from 26 reviews places professional opinion slightly below the general audience response.
