Short description
Claire Bennett lives with severe chronic pain and the emotional scars left by a car accident and the end of her marriage. Sharp-tongued and difficult with the people around her, she has driven away friends and her husband, leaving her Mexican housekeeper Silvana as her closest companion. Claire attends a support group for people dealing with pain and depression, where she meets Nina. When Nina takes her own life, Claire becomes fixated on the death, seeking out Nina's widower, Roy, and drawing closer to him as she tries to understand what happened.
Jennifer Aniston plays Claire, with Adriana Barraza as Silvana, Anna Kendrick as Nina, Sam Worthington as Roy, and Mamie Gummer and Felicity Huffman in supporting roles. Daniel Barnz directed from a screenplay by Patrick Tobin, and the film was produced by Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon and Kristin Hahn. It followed Barnz's Beastly, released three years earlier.
Cake was released in 2014 and runs 102 minutes. Made for about 7 million dollars, it returned roughly 2 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 40,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from about 950 votes, a narrower but similar audience response. Critics gave it 5.9 out of 10 across 125 reviews, close to the audience scores but somewhat lower. The film is a drama set in the United States.
