Based on real events in late 19th-century France, this drama follows Marie Heurtin, a fourteen-year-old girl born blind and deaf. Unable to communicate with those around her, Marie is taken by her father to the Larnay Institute, a facility run by nuns that cares for deaf girls. While others are skeptical of her ability to learn, a young nun named Sister Marguerite works patiently to gain Marie's trust and teach her how to express herself.
The film was directed by Jean-Pierre Améris, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Philippe Blasband. In Améris's career, this production followed Romantics Anonymous and preceded Family for Rent. The movie stars Ariana Rivoire as Marie and Isabelle Carré as Sister Marguerite, with Brigitte Catillon appearing as the Mother Superior.
The film has been received positively by viewers, maintaining a 7.5 rating on IMDb from 2,000 votes and an identical 7.5 score on TMDB based on 100 votes. This audience appreciation is higher than the rating from film critics, who gave the movie a 6.9 based on 24 reviews.
