Short description
Claire Cooper, a children's book illustrator living in New England with her husband Paul, a commercial pilot, begins to suffer disturbing dreams and waking visions. A stranger leads a small girl by the hand through a drowned town and an apple orchard, and Claire comes to understand that she shares a mental link with a killer and sees glimpses of crimes past and still to come. The police, her husband and her psychiatrist all dismiss her warnings, and the visions strain her marriage and her sanity until she decides she must confront the killer herself.
Neil Jordan directed and co-wrote the film with Bruce Robinson, making it the eighth of the fifteen features he has directed, coming between Michael Collins and The End of the Affair. Annette Bening plays Claire, with Aidan Quinn as Paul, Stephen Rea as Doctor Silverman and Robert Downey Jr. as Vivian Thompson. The production, a British, Irish and American co-production, cost about 30 million US dollars and returned roughly 12 million worldwide.
Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb the film holds 5.5 out of 10 across some 14,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.5 from around 205 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 50 reviews places it slightly below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the scenes in the institution for the mentally ill were filmed in a suitable, although now closed, facility in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA.
- The underwater filming took place at the 20th Century Fox studio in the Mexican state of Baja California, in a huge tank built for the filming of James Cameron's "Titanic" (1997). At the request of the film's art director, Nigel Phelps, part of the city was constructed and flooded there.
