Short description
A recently-deposed "Estrovian" monarch seeks shelter in New York City, where he becomes an accidental television celebrity. Later, he's wrongly accused of being a Communist and gets caught up in subsequent HUAC hearings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Before arriving at the idea for this film, Charles Chaplin considered two options, both of which he eventually rejected. Specifically, he thought about reviving the Little Tramp, the hero of many of his films, and about reviving Verdoux from the film 'Monsieur Verdoux' (1947), which were strongly opposed by Chaplin's wife and his assistant.
- The film was shot in just 12 weeks—faster than any of the films made by Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977).
