Gun Shy

Charlie Mayough is a veteran undercover agent for the DEA whose reputation for nerve and composure has collapsed. After an operation goes badly wrong, he is left shaken, and the assignment waiting for him is worse than most: he must get close to Fulvio Nesstra, an unpredictable Mafia figure, long enough to bring down the criminal operation around him. Charlie's superiors will not let him walk away from the job, and his mounting fear of Nesstra pushes him toward psychiatric help.

That help comes through a therapy group and a nurse named Judy Tipp, and the film follows Charlie as he tries to hold his cover together while depending on people far less steady than the hardened agent he used to be. Liam Neeson plays Charlie, with Oliver Platt as Nesstra and Sandra Bullock as Judy. Bullock also produced the film through Fortis Films, and Eric Blakeney wrote and directed it, working with a credited cast of forty-one. The film mixes action and thriller material with comedy and romance across its 101 minutes.

Released in February 2000, Gun Shy was made for about 14 million dollars and took in roughly 3 million worldwide, a return well short of its cost. Audiences were lukewarm: it holds a 5.6 rating on IMDb from around 8,300 votes and a 5.2 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 152. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 45 reviews sits close to the audience scores, so neither critics nor viewers rated it highly.
