The Bride

The Bride is a 1985 gothic drama directed by Franc Roddam, in which Baron Charles Frankenstein succeeds in creating a woman, Eva, as a companion for the male creature he made earlier. When the creature sees her, he is enraged rather than comforted, and Eva herself rejects him, setting off a conflict between the two beings and their maker. The doctor's interest in Eva grows into an obsession as he tries to shape her into the ideal Victorian lady, while the creature is driven away and left to fend for himself. The film draws on Mary Shelley's novel but develops its own story around the relationship between creator and creations.

Roddam's fourth feature followed Dummy, Quadrophenia and The Lords of Discipline, and it came before Aria, War Party and K2. Lloyd Fonvielle wrote the screenplay, Victor Drai produced, and the cast is led by Sting as Frankenstein and Jennifer Beals as Eva, with Anthony Higgins, Clancy Brown, David Rappaport and Geraldine Page in supporting roles. It was a sizeable production, made for roughly 13 million dollars with 44 credited cast members and a crew of 83.

The film was released in August 1985 and performed poorly at the box office, taking in about 4 million dollars worldwide against its budget. Audiences have rated it modestly: 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 3,900 votes, and the same score on TMDB from roughly 90 votes.
