Short description

The wife of a psychoanalyst falls prey to a devious quack hypnotist when he discovers she is an habitual shoplifter. Then one of his previous patients now being treated by the real doctor is found murdered, with her still at the scene, and suspicion points only one way.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the late 1940s, Ben Hecht's (1894-1964) anti-British statements so enraged the public that in the UK copies of the film, his name in the credits was replaced with the pseudonym Lester Barstow.
  • The first two versions of the screenplay were much closer to the literary source—the 1944 novel by Guy Endore (1900-1970)—which is unsurprising, as they were written by Endore himself, working alongside studio screenwriter Harry Kleiner. The second version of the script was completed and presented to the studio in April 1946, but it was rejected just like the first. The project was shelved for approximately two and a half years, after which another screenwriter, Andrew Sorkin (1916-1990), proposed a completely new approach—suggesting changes to the protagonists' names, significant alterations to the plotline, a change in the identity of the main villain, and the introduction of an entirely new character. The final version of the screenplay was written by Ben Hecht, and there are reasons to believe that all the lines and dialogue in the script were penned by Hecht. Later, however, Hecht himself ceased to be pleased with his contribution to the screenplay.
