Short description
A writer whose lover is a woman widowed three times begins to suspect she may be responsible for her husbands' deaths.
What's left behind the scenes
- Paul Verhoeven's previous works were received rather coolly by critics, but they were commercially successful. This film was an exception. Critics and the public were delighted, but it became the least commercially successful film of the director's career.
- Forty actors auditioned for the role of Herman. Tom Hoffman was cast because he was the only one brave enough to kiss Jeruna Krabbe during the screen tests.
- The film rights to the novella belonged to producer Joop van den Ende, but he categorically refused to work with Jeruna Krabbe again, whom director Paul Verhoeven had envisioned for the lead role. Fortunately, Ende's rights were set to expire at the end of the year. Verhoeven went to Gerard Reve's home on New Year's Eve and bought the rights exactly at midnight, as soon as the term expired.
- An adaptation of the eponymous novella (1981) by Dutch writer Gerard Reve (1923-2006).
- Director Paul Verhoeven insisted that Tom Hoffman perform all his own stunts. One of them involved making a sharp turn while driving a car at 80 km/h. After several failed takes, Verhoeven got behind the wheel himself to show the actor how it was done. Furthermore, he ordered Hoffman to try and hit him with the car on the road. Verhoeven actually stood in the road and jumped aside at the very last moment.
