Jason Kelly is a young lawyer on the verge of marrying Meredith, his boss's daughter, a match that would also secure him a partnership at the firm. Before the wedding, his grandfather Dick, a retired general with an appetite for partying, tricks Jason into driving him to Daytona Beach for spring break. The trip pulls Jason away from his carefully planned future, as Dick throws himself into drinking, bar fights and karaoke and pushes his strait-laced grandson to loosen up. The two men have little in common at first, but the journey gradually changes how each of them sees the other.
Dan Mazer directed the film, his second feature after I Give It a Year in 2013 and ahead of Home Sweet Home Alone and The Exchange, both from 2021. John Phillips wrote the screenplay, and Barry Josephson, Bill Block and Michael Simkin produced. Robert De Niro plays Dick opposite Zac Efron as Jason, with Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Julianne Hough and Dermot Mulroney among the credited cast of 76. Made for about 12 million dollars, it took in roughly 94 million worldwide.
Audiences rate it 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from about 131,000 votes and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of some 4,700. A critics' score of 3.1 out of 10 from 135 reviews sits well below those viewer figures.
