My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks continues the story of the human-world counterparts of the ponies from the animated series. At Canterlot High, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Fluttershy have formed a band, the Rainbooms, with Sunset Shimmer, who is trying to make amends for her past behaviour. Their friendly musical showcase turns into a full competition when three new students arrive calling themselves the Dazzlings and push the school into a battle of the bands. Sunset Shimmer comes to suspect that the newcomers are after more than a trophy, and the Rainbooms call on Princess Twilight Sparkle to return from Equestria and help them.
The film is a follow-up to My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, the first entry in the series, and was directed by Jayson Thiessen (in his second feature) and Ishi Rudell. Like its predecessor, it is a Canadian-American production from DHX Media and Hasbro Studios, written by Meghan McCarthy and produced by Devon Cody and Sarah Wall. The voice cast includes Tara Strong as Twilight Sparkle, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain, Cathy Weseluck and Rebecca Shoichet, who provides Sunset Shimmer's speaking voice and Twilight Sparkle's singing voice, among 24 credited performers.
The film runs 73 minutes and blends animation, family entertainment and original songs. Its reception has been broadly positive: on IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 4,400 votes, while on TMDB it scores 8.1/10 from roughly 211 votes, a smaller but notably warmer sample.
