The Crazies is set in Ogden Marsh, a small Midwestern town where life begins to unravel after a mysterious contamination reaches the local water supply. Residents lose their reason and turn violently on one another, and the sheriff, David Dutton, his pregnant wife Judy, his deputy Russell and Judy's hospital colleague Becca are among the few still unaffected. Their attempt to escape is complicated when the authorities seal off the town, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves while the infected close in. The film was directed by Breck Eisner, its fourth feature after Recon, Thoughtcrimes and Sahara, from a screenplay by Scott Kosar and Ray Wright. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell lead the cast, with Joe Anderson, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Reegan and Glenn Morshower in supporting roles.
Made for a budget of about 20 million dollars, the film took roughly 55 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from around 137,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller pool of voters. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 156 reviews places it on roughly the same level as the general audience response, suggesting a film that satisfies viewers without drawing strong praise. It runs 101 minutes.
