Lisbeth Salander is recovering in a Swedish hospital after being shot in the head, under police guard and facing charges of attempted murder and multiple killings. Cut off from the outside world, she must rely on journalist Mikael Blomkvist and his colleagues at Millennium magazine, who investigate the secretive state structures that have shaped her past. Their inquiries put them in conflict with powerful figures who want the affair buried.

The film is the closing chapter of the Swedish screen adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium novels, following the earlier entries in which Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist established these characters. Daniel Alfredson directed it from a screenplay by Ulf Ryberg, with Lena Endre, Annika Hallin, Jacob Ericksson and Sofia Ledarp in supporting roles. It was produced by Søren Stærmose for a modest budget of about four million dollars, and it took roughly forty-three million worldwide, a strong return for a European production of its scale. On IMDb the film has a rating of 7.1 from 1,526 votes, while a film critics' rating of 5.9 from 137 reviews suggests reviewers were less enthusiastic than the broader audience. The story draws on the novel's courtroom and conspiracy threads, bringing Salander's long-running struggle with her past to a head.
