S.F.W. is a 1995 American comedy-drama about Cliff Spab, a disaffected teenager who becomes a national celebrity against his will. Four armed terrorists calling themselves "Broken Image" seize a supermarket and hold a group of people hostage for 36 days, filming their captives and demanding that the footage be broadcast across the United States on national television. Cliff's flat indifference to the threats against his life turns him into a media sensation, and once the ordeal is over he finds himself famous, imitated and pursued rather than simply free.
Jefery Levy directed and shares screenplay credit with Danny Rubin, with Dale Pollock producing. The film was Levy's first as director, followed by Invincible in 2001 and Me in 2014. Stephen Dorff leads as Cliff, with Reese Witherspoon as Wendy Pfister, Jake Busey as Morrow Streeter, Joey Lauren Adams as Monica Dice, Pamela Gidley as Janet Streeter and David Barry Gray as Scott Spab among a credited cast of 53. It runs 96 minutes.
Opinion on the film is divided. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 5,700 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from a much smaller pool of 114. A critics' rating of 3.6 from 16 reviews places professional response well below the more moderate audience scores. The film's interest in how television turns suffering into entertainment has outlasted its modest commercial footprint.
