One Hundred Steps

One Hundred Steps is an Italian drama based on the true story of Peppino Impastato, a young man from the Sicilian town of Cinisi who grows up in a family tied to the local Mafia and lives only a short distance from the home of boss Tano Badalamenti. Rejecting the silence expected of him, Peppino becomes a left-wing activist and, in the late 1970s, takes on the Mafia openly at a time when politicians largely denied its existence. He founds an independent radio station and uses it to mock Badalamenti and those who protect him, drawing the anger of the boss and the disapproval of his own family.

The film is directed by Marco Tullio Giordana, who wrote the screenplay with Monica Zapelli and Claudio Fava, and it was his first feature before The Best of Youth, Yara and The Life Apart. Luigi Lo Cascio plays Peppino, with Luigi Maria Burruano, Lucia Sardo, Paolo Briguglia, Tony Sperandeo and Andrea Tidona in supporting roles. Released in 2000, it earned about 3 million dollars worldwide.
