The Man Who Cried follows a Jewish girl from a Russian village whose father leaves for America in the 1920s, promising to send for the family once he is settled. When violence reaches their community, she flees, but her journey takes her to England instead, where she is taken in, renamed Suzie and forbidden from speaking her first language. Singing becomes her path out, leading her to Paris, where she performs in a revue, forms a close friendship with the dancer Lola and falls for Cesar, a Roma horseman. The German invasion of France shatters that life, and Suzie sets out for America still hoping to find her father.
Sally Potter wrote and directed the film, which sits between Orlando and Yes in her filmography. Christina Ricci plays Suzie, with Johnny Depp as Cesar, Cate Blanchett as Lola, John Turturro as the singer Dante Dominio, Harry Dean Stanton as Felix Perlman and Oleg Yankovskiy as Suzie's father. It was a British, American and French co-production with a budget of about 20 million dollars.
Released in 2000, the film earned roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, far below its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from around 270 votes.
