Francofonia

Francofonia takes place in Paris in 1940, during the German occupation of France. The film centers on Jacques Jaujard, director of the Louvre, and Count Franz Wolff-Metternich, the German officer appointed to oversee the protection of artworks in France. Though they stand on opposing sides of the war, the two men work together to safeguard the museum's collection as the fighting threatens to destroy it. The question hanging over the story is what Paris would be without the Louvre and its treasures. Aleksandr Sokurov builds the film as a blend of staged and documentary material, and it becomes a wider meditation on art, culture and power, with the museum itself as the central subject.

The film was directed by Aleksandr Sokurov from a screenplay he wrote with Alexei Jankovski, and it followed Faust (2011) and Russian Ark (2002) in his filmography. The cast includes Louis-Do de Lencquesaing as Jaujard, Benjamin Utzerath as Wolff-Metternich, Vincent Nemeth as Napoléon Bonaparte and Johanna Korthals Altes as Marianne, with Sokurov providing voice work.

Francofonia runs 87 minutes and was released in November 2015. Its worldwide box office came to about 1 million USD. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 77 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
