Ocean's Thirteen
Short description
Ocean's Thirteen centers on Danny Ocean and his crew of con artists and thieves, who reunite for a job driven by loyalty rather than money. When the ruthless casino operator Willy Bank cheats Reuben Tishkoff, a friend and mentor to Danny, in a business deal, Reuben suffers a heart attack. Danny and his partners decide Bank must be made to pay, and they set their sights on his new Las Vegas casino, aiming to strike on the night it opens. Pulling off the scheme requires the team to bring in outside help, including a former adversary.
The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien. It is the fourteenth of the thirty-five features Soderbergh has directed in chronological order, arriving between The Good German and Che: Part One. George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon lead a large ensemble as Danny Ocean, Rusty Ryan and Linus Caldwell, with Al Pacino joining as Willy Bank and Bernie Mac appearing as Frank Catton; the credited cast and crew each number around 120 people.
Produced by Jerry Weintraub for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, the film was made for 85 million dollars and returned about 311 million dollars worldwide, a substantial multiple of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 386,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from about 7,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 201 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Two members of Ocean’s crew, the Malloy brothers, are named Virgil (Casey Affleck) and Turk (Scott Caan). These names were not chosen randomly – in “The Godfather,” Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, kills a character named Virgil “Turk” Sollozzo.
- Steven Soderbergh initially envisioned only one actor for the role of Willie Bank – Al Pacino. One of Pacino’s close friends, Jerry Weintraub, who was also one of the film's producers, managed to convince the actor to participate in the film.
- The prosthetic nose used by Matt Damon’s character is a reference to the film “The Brothers Grimm,” also starring Damon. The film’s director, Terry Gilliam, wanted the actor to wear a prosthetic nose, but the studio executives vetoed the decision.
- In one episode, Rusty talks to Danny, and they mention that the Sands and Desert Inn casinos once stood here. These were two of the five casinos robbed by Ocean's Eleven in the original 1960 film.
- The first words spoken by Reuben after his coma are, 'I hear cars coming and going, I hear Linus crying. I think you should tell me what everyone already knows.' This is a slightly altered line from Don Corleone, addressed to his advisor in 'The Godfather.' (The death of his son Sonny was being hidden from the Don.)
- Rusty’s ringtone is the song “Don't You Want Me” by The Human League.
- The phrase “You shook Sinatra’s hand” is heard several times in the film. Frank Sinatra played the role of Danny Ocean in the original “Ocean’s Eleven” from 1960.
- Vladimir Klitschko, who had a cameo in the first part of the trilogy, was offered a role in the film but declined.
- Director Steven Soderbergh managed to film all the scenes with Al Pacino in just three weeks.
