Short description
Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative journalist whose career is thrown into crisis after he loses a libel case against a powerful industrialist. Before long he is approached by Henrik Vanger, an elderly wealthy businessman who has never let go of a question that has haunted his family for decades: what happened to his niece Harriet, who vanished from the family estate during a gathering many years earlier. Blomkvist agrees to look into the disappearance, and his path crosses with Lisbeth Salander, a young hacker whose skills in digging up information others would rather keep hidden prove crucial to the inquiry. As the two work together, they uncover troubling secrets within the influential Vanger clan.
The film is the Swedish adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel, directed by Niels Arden Oplev from a screenplay by Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg, and produced by Søren Stærmose. Michael Nyqvist plays Blomkvist and Noomi Rapace plays Salander, with Lena Endre, Sven-Bertil Taube, Peter Haber and Peter Andersson in supporting roles. It was the first feature Oplev directed, preceding Dead Man Down, Speed Walking, Flatliners and Rose.
Made for around 13 million dollars, the film grossed roughly 104 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It holds a 7.8 rating on IMDb from about 230,000 votes and a 7.5 on TMDB from over 3,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 187 reviews places it in line with audience assessments.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the beginning of the film, Lisbeth had a Canon camera. However, later the computer identifies it as a Nikon.
- The original Swedish title of the film translates literally as 'Men Who Hate Women.'
- Erik Cress hastily left the project for confidential reasons, and the film had to be completed by Jens Fischer, who shot the majority of it.
- The film is based on Stieg Larsson's novel "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (Män som hatar kvinnor, 2004).
- In the scene with young Mikael, the camera pans down, showing the boy in modern shoes.
