Truth

Truth is a drama set in September 2004, during the U.S. presidential campaign. Mary Mapes, a producer for the CBS news program 60 Minutes, and her colleague, anchor Dan Rather, prepare a report claiming that George W. Bush received preferential treatment that helped him avoid service in the Vietnam War. The story airs, but the response quickly turns against the journalists. Sources begin changing their accounts, questions are raised about the authenticity of the documents behind the report, and Mapes and Rather find themselves fighting to defend their work. The film is based on Mapes's own account of the events, and Cate Blanchett plays her, with Robert Redford as Rather. Dennis Quaid, Elisabeth Moss, Bruce Greenwood and Stacy Keach appear in supporting roles.

The film was released in 2015 and marks the directing debut of James Vanderbilt, who also wrote the screenplay; his second film as director, Nuremberg, followed in 2025. It was produced by Vanderbilt, Bradley J. Fischer and Brett Ratner, with a budget of around 10 million dollars and a worldwide box office of roughly 5 million. Audience scores are modest, at 6.8 on IMDb from about 23,000 votes and 6.5 on TMDB from some 500 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.2 from 179 reviews, leaving the three broadly in line with one another.
