Short description

Una is a drama built around a confrontation that has been deferred for fifteen years. A young woman named Una turns up unannounced at the workplace of an older man, Ray, who now goes by another name and has built a settled life for himself. Their history reaches back to when she was thirteen and he was a friend of her father; the relationship that developed between them ended with his arrest and imprisonment. Now adults, the two face each other again, and the meeting forces long-buried memories and unresolved feelings to the surface, with consequences for the life Ray has constructed since.

The film is directed by Benedict Andrews, marking his first feature after a career in theatre, and it was written by David Harrower, adapting his own stage play. Rooney Mara plays Una and Ben Mendelsohn plays Ray, with Riz Ahmed, Tara Fitzgerald and Natasha Little in supporting roles. Ruby Stokes appears as the younger Una in flashbacks. The production was a British, Canadian and American co-production with a large credited cast and crew, and runs ninety-four minutes.

Critical response was moderately positive: critics gave it 6.7/10 across 108 reviews, while audiences were cooler, with 6.2/10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 6/10 on TMDB from several hundred. Andrews went on to direct Seberg in 2019 and National Theatre Live: Electra/Persona in 2026.
