In one scene, Silas has his blood drawn for analysis. Nicholas Hoult, who played him, had to wear a hospital gown to hide a large bruise on his arm that the actor sustained while skateboarding with Kristen Stewart.
Director Drake Doremus envisioned only Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles, but strictly together. Had either of them been unable to star in the film, the director would have found another actor or actress for the second role.
Filming took place in Tokyo and Singapore.
