Equals
Short description
In a future society, human emotions have been eliminated to prevent conflict, and citizens live in an ordered collective free of poverty, greed and violence. Silas, an illustrator, and his assistant Nia belong to this calm, uniform world, until a condition spreads that restores feelings its victims were never meant to have. Those affected are removed from society, and a cure is announced. Silas discovers he is infected and becomes an outcast, while growing close to Nia, who seems to understand what he is going through. Together they face a choice between the safety of an emotionless life and a forbidden bond.
Equals is a science fiction romance directed by Drake Doremus, his third feature after Like Crazy and Breathe In. Nathan Parker wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Nicholas Hoult as Silas and Kristen Stewart as Nia, with Jacki Weaver, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hazlewood and Scott Lawrence in supporting roles. It was produced by Scott Free Productions, Route One Entertainment, Infinite Studios and Freedom Media.
The film had a budget of about 16 million dollars and took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 34,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 1,466 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 86 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a mixed response across all three measures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Drake Doremus only envisioned Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles, but always together. If either of this pair had been unable to appear in the film, the director would have found another actor and actress to play the second role.
- Filming took place in Tokyo and Singapore.
- In one scene, Silas has his blood drawn for analysis. Nicholas Hoult, who played him, had to wear a hospital gown to hide a large bruise on his arm that the actor sustained while skateboarding with Kristen Stewart.
- In one scene, Nia and Silas are sitting on a wall, and the girl is telling him something. Kristen Stewart read her own poetry to her co-star.
- Jennifer Lawrence also read the script, but said she didn't see herself in the role of the main character. The actress starred in another film by Doremus – the drama "Like Crazy" (2011).
