Strange Magic

Strange Magic is an animated musical fantasy in which two neighbouring realms that have long kept apart are thrown into conflict. The Fairy Kingdom is home to fairies, elves and other woodland creatures, while the Dark Forest is ruled by the Bog King and inhabited by goblins and swamp creatures. When the border between the two worlds is crossed, the different beings meet for the first time, and their clashing ways quickly lead to friction. A powerful love potion becomes the object of everyone's desire, and the struggle over it threatens to grow into open war. The story draws loosely on William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and is told through well-known popular songs from several decades.

The film was directed by Gary Rydstrom, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Berenbaum and Irene Mecchi. It was produced by Touchstone Pictures and Lucasfilm, and it follows Rydstrom's earlier directorial work on the short films Lifted and Hawaiian Vacation. The voice cast includes Alan Cumming as the Bog King, Evan Rachel Wood as Marianne, Sam Palladio as Roland, Elijah Kelley as Sunny, Meredith Anne Bull as Dawn and Kristin Chenoweth as the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Strange Magic was released in 2015 and runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from roughly 600 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.8 from 59 reviews places it well below the audience scores, and against a budget of 100 million dollars its worldwide box office of 14 million dollars was modest.
