The Evening Star
Short description
The Evening Star follows the later years of Aurora Greenway as she struggles to maintain her family following the death of her daughter. Aurora attempts to guide her three grandchildren, but they have grown distant and rebellious, with one facing incarceration and others struggling financially or emotionally. While dealing with friction from friends and former lovers, Aurora begins seeing a psychoanalyst named Jerry Bruckner, who develops romantic feelings for her.
Directed and written by Robert Harling, the film features Shirley MacLaine in the lead role alongside Bill Paxton, Juliette Lewis, and Miranda Richardson. Produced by Paramount and Rysher Entertainment, the movie was released in 1996. It earned 13 million USD at the worldwide box office.
The film holds a rating of 5.9/10 on IMDb based on 5,300 votes and a matching 5.9/10 on TMDB from 83 votes. Film critics gave the production a lower rating of 4.7/10 based on 34 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the producers realized they could not again rent the house used in James L. Brooks' drama 'Terms of Endearment' (1983), they began searching for a similar building in Houston, Texas. Such a building was found, and it turned out to be owned by the daughter of the man who owned the house used during the filming of 'Terms of Endearment'.
- Mackenzie Astin (who played Teddy Horton) was in a car accident during filming and lost the tip of his right ear. From then until the end of the production period, he had to arrive on set an hour earlier than everyone else. Makeup artists worked their magic on his ear so that it would not look different from the one seen in previously filmed scenes.
- Among the characters in James L. Brooks' 'Terms of Endearment' (1983), General is absent, although this character appears in both of Larry Montgomery's novels. Conversely, the novels do not feature astronaut Garrett Breedlove (played by Jack Nicholson), who was created as a replacement for General.
- Jeff Daniels played Flap Horton in 'Terms of Endearment'. He was forced to decline the offer to return to this role in Robert Harling's 'Evening Star' because he had already signed on to star in Stephen Herek's family comedy '101 Dalmatians' (1996).
- The director of the first part, James L. Brooks, was approached with an offer to direct this sequel, but he refused, believing that everything had already been said in the first film and that a second one could not add anything new to a completed story.
