Creation is a British drama set in the nineteenth century, centred on Charles Darwin as he works to complete the book that will become On the Origin of Species. His research points toward a theory of evolution that challenges the beliefs of the society around him, while his religious wife, Emma, opposes the direction his work has taken. The strain between his scientific conclusions and his faith, and the effect on his marriage, form the core of the story. Paul Bettany plays Darwin and Jennifer Connelly plays Emma, with Martha West as their daughter Anne, Toby Jones as Thomas Henry Huxley and Jeremy Northam as John Brodie-Innes. The screenplay was written by John Collee, and the film draws on a family memoir assembled by Darwin's descendant Randal Keynes.
The film is the eighth directed by Jon Amiel, following Busted, Tune in Tomorrow..., Sommersby, Copycat, The Man Who Knew Too Little, Entrapment and The Core. It was produced by Jeremy Thomas, Nick O'Hagan and Pip Ayers, with BBC Film, HanWay Films, the UK Film Council and Recorded Picture Company among the production companies. It runs 108 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 115 reviews, while on TMDB it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 250 votes, indicating that critics were harsher on the film than audiences were.
