Short description

Damon Gameau explores the impact of sugar on the human body through a personal experiment. He changes his diet to include only foods typically perceived as healthy, such as low-fat yogurt, muesli, and fruit juices, to document how these items contribute to sugar intake. By tracking the physical changes in his own healthy body, he examines the prevalence of hidden sugars in supermarkets and the role of the food industry.

Directed and written by Gameau, this Australian documentary was released in 2014 and is the first of two films he has directed, followed by Future Council in 2025. Gameau also appears as himself, supported by a cast that includes Stephen Fry, Brenton Thwaites, Isabel Lucas, Jessica Marais, and John Leary. The production was handled by Madman Entertainment, Sprout Pictures, and Old Mates Productions.

The film has received generally positive feedback from viewers. It holds a rating of 7.4/10 on IMDb based on 11,000 votes and a 6.9/10 rating on TMDB from 238 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea for the film arose when Yolngu Aboriginal man David Gulpilil invited Damian Gumo to visit him in the Northern Territory. Gumo was shocked by how deeply Western culture and food had penetrated Aboriginal life. In particular, he saw mothers feeding Coca-Cola to newborns.
  • Hugh Jackman's cameo was filmed in two hours during a break in his shooting schedule.
  • Damian Gumo hoped for cameo appearances by stars such as Hugh Jackman, Stephen Fry, and Breton Thwaites. He wanted the film to appeal to audiences who do not typically watch documentaries.
