Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice

Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice takes place during the Christmas holidays, when a severe snowstorm strikes Tokyo. The storm is tied to the return of Princess Snow Kaguya, an ancient enemy from beyond the solar system who once tried to claim Earth and was driven off long ago. She now travels aboard a comet, sending fragments of it ahead of her to prepare an invasion, and one such fragment falls to Earth, where it is found by Kakeru Ozora, a young astronomer who has long studied the legend of a princess on the Moon. The crystal's presence worsens his already fragile health, and Luna, the cat who belongs to Usagi and her friends, takes an interest in helping him. As the Sailor Guardians confront the Snow Dancers sent to freeze the city, Usagi and the others must recover the crystal before Kaguya can drain the planet's life energy and cover it in ice.

The film is directed by Hiroki Shibata, the first of three features in his directing filmography, and written by Sukehiro Tomita. Kotono Mitsuishi voices Usagi Tsukino, with Aya Hisakawa, Michie Tomizawa, Emi Shinohara, Rica Fukami and Kae Araki as the other Guardians. Released in Japan in December 1994, it runs just under an hour and earned about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from roughly 2,500 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.6/10, from a smaller base of 156 votes.
