Short description
Experimenter dramatizes the obedience experiments conducted by social psychologist Stanley Milgram at Yale University in 1961. Volunteers recruited for what they believe is a study of learning are instructed to deliver electric shocks to a stranger in another room whenever he answers incorrectly. As the man's protests grow louder, most participants keep going, not because they wish him harm but because a figure in authority tells them to continue. Milgram's findings land amid public fascination with the televised trial of Adolf Eichmann, and the work brings him both acclaim and accusations that he manipulated and deceived the people he studied. His wife, Sasha, remains at his side as the controversy unfolds.
Michael Almereyda directed from his own screenplay, working with producers Aimee Schoof and Isen Robbins. The film follows Cymbeline in his filmography and precedes Marjorie Prime and Tesla. Peter Sarsgaard plays Milgram, with Winona Ryder as Sasha, Jim Gaffigan as James McDonough, Edoardo Ballerini as Paul Hollander and Kellan Lutz as William Shatner. The picture runs 97 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from 498 votes, while critics gave it 7.2 from 82 reviews, a notably warmer response than that of the general audience.

- In 2004, Bill Condon's drama "Kinsey" was released, also starring Peter Sarsgaard. The film tells the story of Alfred Kinsey (1894-1956), a pioneer in the field of sexological research.
- This is the second project in which John Leguizamo and Edoardo Ballerini have starred together. They previously filmed together in Paul Miller's comedy "Slippery Slope" (1997).
- Peter Sarsgaard and John Leguizamo first met on set after working on Frank Reyes' film "Empire" (2002). In both films, Sarsgaard's character deceives the character played by Leguizamo in some way.
