Baron Frankenstein has been driven from his castle after the local villagers turn against his experiments, and he makes his way back to Karlstaad with his assistant Hans. There he finds the body of the creature he once assembled, preserved in ice in the mountains, and sets out to revive it. Because the creature's brain does not work as it should, Frankenstein enlists the hypnotist Zoltan, who takes control of the revived monster and turns it toward his own ends, setting off a series of killings that the baron must try to stop.
Peter Cushing plays the baron, with Peter Woodthorpe as Zoltan, Sandor Elès as Hans, Duncan Lamont and Katy Wild among the credited cast of 27. The film was directed by Freddie Francis, whose credits in order include The Day of the Triffids and Paranoiac from 1963, Nightmare and this film from 1964, and later titles such as Dracula Has Risen from the Grave and Tales from the Crypt. Anthony Hinds wrote the screenplay and produced for Hammer Film Productions. It runs 87 minutes and belongs to the studio's cycle of Frankenstein pictures.
Released in May 1964, the film holds an IMDb rating of 6/10 from around 5,200 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.2/10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.4/10 from seven reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
