Short description
Chronicles a single day in the summer of 1989 when the future president of the United States, Barack Obama, wooed his future First Lady on an epic first date across Chicago's South Side.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming for the movie took 15 days.
- As director Richard Tann later recounted, all the events shown in the film actually took place during the first date of Barack Obama and his future wife, Michelle. The only exception was the community meeting, which happened later.
- The first feature film about the life of the 44th US President, Barack Hussein Obama II. The second such film was Vikram Gandhi's 'Barry,' which was also released in 2016.
- Barack Obama, played by Parker Sawyers, drives a yellow Nissan Sentra hatchback.
- The film was shot in Chicago, Illinois, where the future Obamas lived in 1989. Some scenes were filmed in Waukegan, in the same state.
- 'South Side' in the title refers to the impoverished southern district of Chicago, where the future US president once worked as a community organizer.
- On their first date, Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama watched Spike Lee's drama 'Do the Right Thing' (1989). Excerpts from it are shown in Richard Tanneker's film.
