Short description

Kate and Geoff Mercer have been married for 45 years and are preparing a party to mark the occasion. Days before the celebration, a letter arrives from Switzerland: the body of Geoff's first love, who died in a climbing accident in the Alps around half a century earlier, has been recovered from a glacier. The news unsettles them both, and as the final preparations continue, Kate begins to see her husband and their long life together differently. What was meant to be a happy anniversary becomes a test of the marriage itself.

Andrew Haigh wrote and directed the film, which followed his earlier features Five Miles Out and Weekend in his filmography. Charlotte Rampling plays Kate and Tom Courtenay plays Geoff, with Geraldine James, Dolly Wells, David Sibley and Sam Alexander in supporting roles. Tristan Goligher produced, and the film was made in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Released in 2015, the drama runs 95 minutes and took about 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure consistent with its small-scale production. Reception split along familiar lines: critics rated it 8.6 out of 10 across 209 reviews, while audiences were cooler, with 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 37,000 votes and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 800 votes. The gap suggests a film that impressed reviewers more than it connected with general viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the short story “In Another Country” (2001) by David Constantine.
  • Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay starred together in the film "Night Train to Lisbon" (2013).
  • The filmmakers mixed up the seasons. Winter is shown on Tuesday – bare trees and an oak tree with withered leaves. By Wednesday, spring has already arrived – shrubs with newly sprouted leaves are visible. On the following day, a flowering fruit tree is shown near the factory gates. Winter returns again on Saturday. The viewer sees the same bare trees.
  • In several scenes, Tom Courtenay's character drinks tea from a cup with the "Hull City" logo, an English professional football club. Tom is the President of the Hull City Supporters' Club.
