Ode to My Father

Ode to My Father follows Yoon Deok-soo, a man whose life is shaped by the upheavals of modern Korean history. As a boy during the Korean War, he is separated from his father and younger sister while his family flees the port of Hungnam, and he takes on the responsibility of supporting those who remain. Determined to keep a promise made to his father, he later travels to Germany to work as a miner and then serves in the Vietnam War, never giving up his hope of being reunited with the missing members of his family.

The film was directed by JK Youn, his third feature after Sex Is Zero (2002) and Tidal Wave (2009), from a screenplay by Park Soo-jin, with Lee Sang-jik producing. Hwang Jung-min stars as the adult Deok-soo, alongside Yunjin Kim, Oh Dal-su, Jung Jin-young, Jang Young-nam and Ra Mi-ran. A large credited cast and crew of more than a hundred people contributed to the production.

Released in December 2014, the drama became a major commercial success, earning about 105 million US dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 143 votes, while film critics rated it 7.5 out of 10 across eight reviews. These figures indicate that both general audiences and critics responded positively, with the critics' score slightly ahead of the audience rating.
