Jim Osborne works as an assistant manager at a bank in New Orleans, where everyone knows him as an honest and dependable man. Late one Friday, he takes a million dollars from the safe. His plan is to leave the country with his wife over the weekend and start over in Brazil, where he intends to invest the money. What he has not counted on is his own conscience. Once the theft is done, he begins to have second thoughts and wants to put the money back before the bank opens again on Monday morning. Returning it, however, proves far more complicated than taking it, and the hours he has left keep running out.
Andrew L. Stone directed and wrote the screenplay. The film comes second in the chronological list of his directing credits shown here, after Stormy Weather. Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright, who had appeared together a decade earlier in Shadow of a Doubt, play Jim and his wife Laurie. Among the forty-one credited performers are Jonathan Hale, Walter Sande, Eddie Marr and Carleton Young. Bert E. Friedlob produced the picture for 20th Century Fox and Thor Productions.
