Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol is a holiday special in which Amy Pond and Rory Williams, travelling on a space liner during their honeymoon, find the ship losing control in the atmosphere of a planet and about to crash. Amy calls the Eleventh Doctor for help, and his only route to saving the passengers runs through Kazran Sardick, the wealthy, embittered man who controls the planet's skies. The Doctor sets out to change the old miser's life, while something waits in the fog of Christmas Eve.
Toby Haynes directed the 62-minute film from a screenplay by Steven Moffat, produced by Sanne Wohlenberg for BBC Wales. It was released on 25 December 2010 and was the first of the three features Haynes has directed, followed by Brexit: The Uncivil War in 2019 and Andor in 2022. Matt Smith plays the Doctor, with Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory. Michael Gambon appears as the older Kazran and Elliot Sardick, Laurence Belcher as the young Kazran, and Katherine Jenkins as Abigail.
The film blends drama and science fiction, borrowing its structure from Dickens while placing it inside the Doctor Who universe. On TMDB it holds a rating of 8 out of 10 from 250 votes, indicating a warm response from viewers relative to the wider franchise.
