The Package

The Package is a 1989 action thriller about Sergeant Johnny Gallagher, a Green Beret escorting a prisoner back to the United States. When the man escapes at the airport, Gallagher sets out to recapture him, only to find that military and government figures on both sides of the Cold War seem determined to stop him. He comes to suspect the fugitive is connected to a political conspiracy, and with few people he can trust, including his estranged wife, he pursues the case himself.

Andrew Davis directed the film, which followed Code of Silence and Above the Law and came before Under Siege and The Fugitive. John Bishop wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Gene Hackman as Gallagher, with Tommy Lee Jones as the escaped prisoner Thomas Boyette, Joanna Cassidy as Eileen Gallagher, John Heard as Col. Glen Whitacre, Dennis Franz as Lt. Milan Delich and Pam Grier as Ruth Butler. Orion Pictures produced it on a budget of about 16 million dollars.

Released in August 1989, the film took in roughly 11 million dollars worldwide, less than its production cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from fewer than 300 votes. A critics' score of 5.9 from 19 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience ratings.
