Orphans

Two brothers, Treat and Philip, have relied on each other since childhood in a rundown house outside New York. Treat, the elder, supports them through petty theft, while Philip rarely leaves the house. Their routine is interrupted when Treat brings home Harold, a well-dressed, drunken stranger he assumes is wealthy, and holds him captive. Harold turns out to be a seasoned criminal, and the balance of power shifts as he takes an interest in the brothers and their isolated lives.

The film is a crime drama directed by Alan J. Pakula, working from a screenplay by Lyle Kessler. It sits between Sophie's Choice and Presumed Innocent in the sequence of features Pakula directed. Albert Finney plays Harold, with Matthew Modine as Treat and Kevin Anderson as Philip; John Kellogg, Anthony Heald and Novella Nelson appear in supporting roles. Pakula produced alongside Susan Solt.

Orphans was released in September 1987 and runs 115 minutes. The ratings divide along audience lines: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around a thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from eight reviews places it above both audience scores, though that figure rests on few reviews.
