The Field

The Field is an Irish drama set in a rural village, where a tenant farmer named Bull McCabe has spent years tending a small plot of land that his family has worked for generations. When the widowed owner puts the field up for auction, McCabe is certain he will be the one to buy it and that no neighbour would bid against him. His plans are unsettled by an American newcomer who wants the land for his own purposes, setting up a conflict over who has the right to it.

Jim Sheridan directed and wrote the screenplay, following his debut feature My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown from the previous year. Richard Harris plays Bull McCabe, with John Hurt, Sean Bean, Frances Tomelty, Brenda Fricker and Ruth McCabe among a credited cast of 29. The film was produced by Noel Pearson with Sovereign Pictures and Granada Television on a budget of 5 million dollars, and its worldwide box office came to about 1 million dollars.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7 from around 107 votes. Both audience scores fall in similar territory, indicating a reasonably well-regarded film whose modest commercial returns did not match its production cost.
