Carrie Pilby is a nineteen-year-old prodigy who finished Harvard and has little idea how to live among people her own age. Sharp, awkward and quick to judge, she sees much of New York City as shallow and hypocritical, and she spends most of her time alone in her apartment reading rather than mixing with anyone. Her father has nearly given up on her finding a place in the world, and her therapist pushes her toward a plan meant to loosen her rigid thinking: get out, meet people, make friends, try dating, and perhaps find work. The arrangement forces her into blind dates and social gatherings she would rather avoid, testing whether her convictions survive contact with an ordinary life she has so far kept at a distance.
Susan Johnson directed the film, her first feature, from a screenplay by Kara Holden, and it was produced by Susan Cartsonis, Brent Emery and Johnson. Bel Powley leads the cast as Carrie, with Vanessa Bayer, Colin O'Donoghue, William Moseley, Jason Ritter and Gabriel Byrne in supporting roles. Johnson went on to direct To All the Boys I've Loved Before the following year.
The film runs 98 minutes and was released in 2017. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from a much smaller pool of 451 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 26 reviews sits close to those audience scores, suggesting a modest but generally even reception rather than a sharply divided one.
