Short description
Spectral is a science fiction action thriller set in a European city devastated by war, where soldiers have begun dying at the hands of an unseen enemy. An engineer named Clyne, who helped develop advanced weaponry that proves useless against these apparitions, is sent into the combat zone with a special operations unit to find out what the threat actually is. As the team pushes into the ruined streets, they discover that conventional arms offer no protection, and the mission becomes a struggle to identify and survive something they can barely perceive.
The film is directed by Nic Mathieu from a screenplay by George Nolfi, produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. James Badge Dale plays Clyne, with Emily Mortimer as Fran Madison, Gonzalo Menendez as Captain Marco Cabrera, Max Martini as Major Sessions, Ryan Robbins as Sergeant Comstock, and Bruce Greenwood as General Orland. It runs 109 minutes.
Released in December 2016, Spectral had a budget of 70 million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 70,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from just over 2,100 votes. A critics' score of 5.7 from nine reviews places it slightly below the audience ratings, though the small sample size makes that gap hard to read as a firm verdict. The production involved 32 credited cast members and 92 credited crew.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film features Tatra-made armored personnel carriers, and their frames are arranged not lengthwise along the body, but transversely. The suspension is clearly visible at the 26th minute of the film when the APCs stop.
- The patch of the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the US Army is visible on General Orlando’s uniform. This unit is stationed in Vicenza, in the Italian region of Veneto, so in the event of a global crisis, the 173rd Brigade could well be deployed to Moldova.
- DARPA is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, responsible for developing new technologies for use by the armed forces. Specifically, the Agency works with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, which provides unified command and control of special operations forces across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Initially, Universal Pictures planned to shoot the film for theatrical release, but the film ultimately premiered on Netflix (a streaming media film and series provider).
- The “castle” on top of the mountain, where special forces retreat, is called Citadella, or Citadel. It is located in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The statue of a woman raising a palm leaf above her head is the Hungarian Statue of Liberty.
- After landing at the US Air Force base in Moldova, the hero of James Badge Dale passes by MiG-21s and other Soviet aircraft from the former Slovak Air Force with US Air Force markings.
