Short description

Real estate developer Jake Berman hires private investigator and war veteran Jake Gittes for some run-of-the-mill matrimonial work. After Berman shoots his wife's lover, who happens to be his business partner, Gittes is drawn into a web of conspiracy and deceit involving the oil reserves beneath Los Angeles. While investigating, Gittes hears a voice from his past that causes him to revisit a traumatic case in Chinatown.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was conceived in the mid-1980s, and was originally planned to star Jack Nicholson alongside Kathy Moriarty, however, after numerous delays in starting filming and due to Moriarty's physical and emotional state, the role was given to another actress.
  • The film is set in 1948, eleven years after the events of Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown” (1974).
  • Jack Nicholson gained weight for the role of an older J.J. Gittes.
  • The film features a wire recorder, i.e., a device using a magnet to record vibrations onto steel wire as it passes through the device. The recording quality was surprisingly good for its time. The film features a Webster-Chicago model 80 wire recorder, which was manufactured from 1948 to 1950.
