Nouvelle Vague

Nouvelle Vague is a 1990 drama directed and written by Jean-Luc Godard. The film centres on Elena Torlato-Favrini, an Italian countess and industrial heiress who takes in Roger Lennox, a man she finds by the roadside, and brings him to her lakeside estate. Their relationship settles into a strange arrangement in which his passivity gradually erodes her grip on the business empire she has inherited. During a boat trip on the lake, Roger goes into the water and drowns. Some time later a man who looks exactly like him, and who claims to be his brother, arrives at the house seeking work. He is far more forceful than Roger ever was, and he soon takes charge of both Elena's household and her affairs.

Godard wrote the screenplay himself, and the film is the twentieth of the twenty-three features he directed in chronological order, following Aria and preceding Scénarios. Alain Delon plays the dual role of Roger and Richard Lennox, with Domiziana Giordano as Elena; the credited cast numbers twenty-three and also includes Jacques Dacqmine, Christophe Odent, Roland Amstutz and Cécile Reigher.

The film runs eighty-nine minutes and was produced in France and Switzerland. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 out of 10 from thirty-seven votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from seven reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores, suggesting a warmer reception among reviewers than among general viewers.
