Short description
Mulan: Rise of a Warrior follows a young woman in ancient China who takes her aging father's place in the army when the Rouran people threaten the Wei dynasty. Disguised as a man, she joins the ranks and discovers a talent for leadership, rising through the military as the war demands ever more from her. The strain of command and the risk of exposure weigh on her as the conflict builds toward open battle.
Jingle Ma Choh-Sing directed and co-wrote the film with Zhang Ting, placing it between Tokyo Raiders (2000) and Battle of the Wolf (2025) in his directing career. Zhao Wei plays Hua Mulan, with Chen Kun as Wentai, Hu Jun as the Rouran prince Mendu, Jaycee Chan as Fei XiaoHu, Nicky Lee as Hu Guei and Vitas as Gude. Twenty-four cast members are credited.
Produced across Hong Kong and mainland China by companies including Bona Film Group, TIK Films, Shanghai Film Group and Starlight International Media, the film had a budget of about 12 million USD and took roughly 13 million USD worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 7,100 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.5/10 from about 460 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The adventures of Mulan were first described in the famous Chinese musical poem “The Ballad of Mulan” in the 6th century. Unfortunately, the original text of this work was lost during the reign of the Tang dynasty, so the later work by the famous Chinese musician and lyricist, Guo Maoquan, in the 12th century is considered the original poem.
- The singer Vitas (Vitaly Grachev) performed the opening song "Not for Glory" ("Beneath the Glory").
- Wei Zhao was cast in the lead role, beating out Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, and Liu Liefei.
