The Girl King is a historical drama and romance about Kristina, who became the queen of Sweden at the age of six. Raised as a prince within a strict, conservative court, she struggles to modernize her country and pursue her interest in the arts and sciences against the wishes of the ruling council. The central conflict follows Kristina as she resists pressure to marry and produce an heir, instead exploring her sexuality and developing a romantic relationship with her lady-in-waiting, Countess Ebba Sparre. This bond creates further tension with the aristocracy, who seek to limit the queen's power and use her personal life to influence her political decisions.
Directed by Mika Kaurismäki, the film was released in 2015 and serves as the second work in a sequence of films that includes Road North and Master Cheng. The movie stars Malin Buska as Kristina and Sarah Gadon as Ebba Sparre, with a supporting cast featuring Michael Nyqvist, Lucas Bryant, Laura Birn, and Hippolyte Girardot. The production was a collaboration between companies from Germany, Canada, Finland, France, and Sweden. On IMDb, the film has a rating of 5.9/10 based on 4,700 votes, while on TMDB it holds a score of 6.2/10 from 184 votes.
