Unfreedom is a drama that explores the struggle for personal identity through two parallel stories set in New York and New Delhi. In the first narrative, a liberal Muslim scholar is kidnapped by a fundamentalist who intends to kill him. Simultaneously, in India, a woman hiding her sexual orientation abducts her bisexual lover with the goal of marriage. Both plots use violence and confinement to examine how characters clash with the restrictive expectations and social constraints of their respective environments.
Directed and produced by Raj Amit Kumar, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Damon J. Taylor, the film features a cast including Victor Banerjee, Adil Hussain, Bhanu Uday, Preeti Gupta, Bhavani Lee, and Ankur Vikal. The production was a joint effort between India and the United States and operated on a budget of 2 million USD.
Released in May 2015, the movie received a mixed to mediocre response from viewers, holding a 5/10 rating on IMDb from 2,100 votes and a 5.2/10 on TMDB from 20 votes. Professional critics gave the film a lower score than the general audience, with a rating of 3.4/10 based on 11 reviews.
