Jeff and Karen Gaffney lead a quiet suburban life, and Jeff works in human resources at a company called MBI. Their routine is disrupted when the Joneses move in next door. Tim and Natalie Jones are glamorous, successful and accomplished at everything they attempt, and the Gaffneys increasingly suspect that their new neighbours are too good to be true. Their curiosity turns up something unexpected: the Joneses are undercover government agents, and the Gaffneys soon find themselves caught up in an international espionage plot rather than merely observing their neighbours.
Greg Mottola directed the film, which sits between Clear History and Confess, Fletch in his filmography. Michael LeSieur wrote the screenplay, and Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald produced. Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot play the Joneses, while Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher play the Gaffneys; Patton Oswalt and Matt Walsh appear in supporting roles.
Released in October 2016, the action comedy runs 105 minutes and was made for around 40 million dollars, a figure it did not recover at the box office, with worldwide takings of roughly 30 million. Audiences rate it modestly, with a score of 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from some 72,000 votes and 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer voters. A film critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 123 reviews places critical opinion below the audience scores.
