Christian, a pest controller, learns that his estranged daughter has died of a drug overdose. When an anonymous recording of her final days reaches him, he sets out to find the people who were with her, working his way from one name to the next through brutal questioning. Along the outback roads he picks up Alice, a young hitchhiker who has no idea what he does when they stop.
The film is an Australian crime thriller written and directed by Steven Kastrissios, who also produced it with Rebecca Dakin through Kastle Films. It was his first feature, followed years later by Skybreaker. Peter Marshall plays Christian, with Caroline Marohasy as Alice and supporting turns from Brad McMurray, Jack Henry, Evert McQueen and Christopher Sommers.
Made on a modest independent scale, The Horseman drew little attention at the box office but found a following on home video. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from roughly 5,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 116. A critics' score of 5.8 from 28 reviews places it close to the audience verdict, with neither group treating it as more than a serviceable genre entry.
