Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist whose career has been damaged by a losing court case, is hired by Henrik Vanger, the elderly head of a wealthy Swedish industrial family, to look into a disappearance that has gone unexplained for four decades. Vanger's niece Harriet vanished from the family's island without a trace, and he believes a relative killed her. Lisbeth Salander, a young hacker under state guardianship, is drawn into the investigation and eventually works alongside Blomkvist, and the two turn up evidence of financial wrongdoing and old crimes that reaches well beyond one family.
David Fincher directed the film, the ninth of the thirteen features he has made, following The Social Network and preceding Gone Girl, from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. Daniel Craig plays Blomkvist and Rooney Mara plays Salander, with Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger, Stellan Skarsgård as Martin Vanger, Robin Wright as Erika Berger and Yorick van Wageningen as Nils Bjurman, among a credited cast of ninety. The production, mounted by Columbia Pictures, Scott Rudin Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Yellow Bird, cost about 90 million dollars and returned roughly 233 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from some 526,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from about 7,800 votes, while the critics' score stands at 7.6 from 256 reviews.
