Short description
Kenny Wells is a businessman who has spent his life around the gold trade, following his father into a world of risk and speculation. Luck has not been on his side, and with his options running out he teams up with Michael Acosta, a geologist whose fortunes are as poor as his own. Together they stake everything on an expedition into the remote jungles of Indonesia, convinced that a major gold deposit is waiting to be found. What begins as a long shot turns into wealth beyond their expectations, drawing the attention of Wall Street and raising questions about the true nature of their discovery.
Matthew McConaughey plays Kenny Wells, with Bryce Dallas Howard as Kay, Edgar Ramírez as Acosta, and supporting turns from Timothy Simons, Michael Landes and Stacy Keach. Stephen Gaghan directed from a screenplay by Patrick Massett and John Zinman, and the film was produced by Michael Nozik, McConaughey and Massett. It was Gaghan's third feature as director, arriving between Syriana and Dolittle.
Released in 2016, Gold is an adventure drama with thriller elements. Made for around 20 million dollars, it took in roughly 15 million worldwide. Audience responses have been moderate, with a rating of 6.7 on IMDb from about 74,000 votes and 6.6 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 1,801. The critics' score stands at 5.2 from 186 reviews, noticeably below the audience figures.
