Venom
Short description
Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist whose career has collapsed after a scandal. While looking into the Life Foundation, a company run by the scientist Carlton Drake, he learns that Drake has been conducting secret experiments on human subjects using alien organisms called symbiotes. Eddie sneaks into the company's facilities, where one of the symbiotes bonds with him. He gains superhuman abilities and must share his body with a violent, forceful alien presence.
The film is a science fiction action story set in the Spider-Man universe, with Tom Hardy playing both Eddie and the symbiote Venom. Michelle Williams appears as Eddie's former partner Anne Weying, while Riz Ahmed plays Drake. Ruben Fleischer directed, working from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner and Kelly Marcel, with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal producing. It was Fleischer's fourth feature, following Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less and Gangster Squad.
Released in September 2018, the film had a budget of 116 million USD and earned 856 million USD worldwide, a large return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from 603,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8/10 from 17,609 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5/10 from 365 reviews places it well below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film was conceived as a direct spin-off of 'Spider-Man 3: Enemy in Reflection' (2007), although it was announced that Topher Grace would not return to his role. Soon after the franchise rebooted, the project was announced again. Chris Zilka expressed his interest in the role of Flash Thompson. When 'The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage' (2014) was released, Sony announced that the Venom film would be part of their Spider-Man cinematic universe. Shortly after, Sony and Marvel decided to collaborate on the Spider-Man franchise. The result was a new reboot of the franchise and a postponed spin-off about Venom. Although Sony wanted to continue working on its spin-offs to 'Spider-Man', no future projects were heard about until February 2018.
